Amanda L. Grellner will receive the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys’ 2026 Prosecutor of the Year award for her service over the past year.

Grellner has served as the elected prosecuting attorney for Osage County since 2002. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, she has tried more than 30 jury trials throughout her tenure as prosecuting attorney.

Grellner is on the Missouri Sentencing Advisory Commission, the Supreme Court of Missouri Treatment Court Committee, the board of the Missouri Prosecuting Attorneys and Circuit Attorneys Retirement System, and is a member of the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys. She is chair of the Part-Time Prosecutors Committee and of the board of the Community Health Center of Central Missouri.

Grellner previously received the Pro Bono Award from The Missouri Bar.

Grellner said the responsibility of prosecutors to “seek justice for victims and hold offenders accountable” requires approaching each case with “integrity and sound judgment,” recognizing that their duty is to the “pursuit of justice, not to winning at all costs.”

“Serving as prosecuting attorney in Osage County, the community where I grew up, is a profound privilege,” Grellner said. “The personal connection to this community deepens my commitment to the work and underscores the importance of maintaining the public’s trust through ethical and just prosecution.”

Grellner said receiving the award was “deeply humbling and profoundly meaningful.” She said it carried special significance because it acknowledged the contributions of a part-time prosecutor.

“Every day, prosecutors across Missouri — many of them part-time — work long hours in their communities, often with limited resources and substantial demands,” Grellner said. “We do this work because we believe in justice and in service to our communities.”

Grellner will accept the Prosecutor of the Year award in Kansas City during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 16-18.

Established by The Missouri Bar Board of Governors in 2004, the awards recognize jurists who, by virtue of their integrity, leadership, and diligence in the pursuit of the efficient administration of justice, inspire other members of the judiciary to similar noble purpose.

Hansbrough

Hansbrough graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and was a managing partner with Swanson, Midgley, LLC, where she was founder and director of the firm’s volunteer attorney project. She was a member at the Law Offices of Stout & Hansbrough, LLC. In 2014, she was appointed associate circuit judge in the Circuit Court of Platte County. In 2021, she was appointed circuit judge in the Circuit Court of Platte County.

Hansbrough is a member of the Missouri Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence Commission, the Missouri Bar Judicial Conference Executive Council, and the Missouri Circuit Court Budget Committee. She is a former member of the Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Realignment Task Force.

“When I reflect on my career and what this award means to me, I find myself thinking less about the titles I have held and more about the doors I have had the privilege, and sometimes the challenge, of opening,” Hansbrough said. “Long before I became a judge, I experienced what it meant to enter places where women had not previously held positions of leadership.”

Hansbrough was the first woman to become a partner at Swanson, Midgley, LLC, a firm that had been in existence for more than 100 years, and later became its first female managing partner. She then became the first woman to serve as a judge in the 6th Judicial Circuit and ultimately the first female presiding judge.

Hansbrough said that being a pioneer is an honor but also carries a responsibility.

“There were struggles along the way, and there were times when I was very conscious that I was breaking ground that had not been previously broken,” Hansbrough said. “Those experiences taught me the importance of preservice, fairness, humility, and perhaps most importantly, the responsibility to leave the path wider for those who would follow.”

Gardner

Gardner has served on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, since 2020. He previously served as a circuit judge in the 32nd Judicial Circuit, which covers Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, and Perry counties. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law. Gardner is a member of the Supreme Court of Missouri’s Civil Rules Committee and is the chair of the Board of Certified Court Reporter Examiners. From 2013 to 2026, he served on the Missouri Board of Law Examiners. He previously served on The Missouri Bar Board of Governors and Young Lawyers’ Section Council and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Missouri Bar Foundation.

Gardner said he was grateful for all the amazing people he’s worked with over the years, from the time he was a circuit judge through his time in the Eastern District.

“We've worked on so many difficult cases, and I couldn't have done my job without all their help,” Gardner said. “I am pleased to share this recognition with them.”

Gardner said serving as a judge is an incredible honor and profound responsibility.

“My drive comes from ensuring fairness and trying to get our decisions right,” Gardner said. “Even though at the appellate level we rarely see the litigants themselves, it is important to remember that our decisions have a real impact on people's everyday lives.”

Gardner said his advice to fellow members of the bar, especially new lawyers, is to reflect on the preamble to the Rules of Professional Conduct, which discuss the lawyer’s role as a “public citizen.”

“We should all seek improvement of the law and access to justice, using our knowledge to further the public's understanding of the rule of law and our judicial system,” Gardner said.

The Tom Cochran Community Service Award recognizes a member of The Missouri Bar whose service and professionalism have enhanced their community. The award is named after Thomas D. Cochran, whose commitment and contributions to the practice of law and his community inspired generations of lawyers.  

Drake is a partner at Parks & Drake, Attorneys at the Lake, where she represents clients throughout Mid-Missouri in family law, real estate, civil litigation, and business matters. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, Drake is The Missouri Bar Young Lawyers’ Section Council District 12 representative, is co-chair of the YLS Council CLE committee, and is a member of several statewide initiatives focused on leadership and professional development.

Drake received this award in recognition of her commitment to community service and leadership as president of The Changing Table, Mid-Missouri’s regional diaper bank. Drake works closely with the organization’s board of directors and executive director to support daily operations, expand community partnerships, and further the nonprofit’s mission of ensuring that no child goes without an adequate supply of diapers.

She represents the organization at community events, educates local businesses and civic groups about diaper insecurity, and advocates for increased awareness of the challenges many working families face in accessing basic necessities. Her leadership has helped strengthen the organization’s visibility in the region.

Drake said she is dedicated to helping others navigate some of life’s most difficult circumstances with compassion and integrity. Through her legal career and volunteer efforts, she said she has “demonstrated that meaningful community impact is created through consistent leadership, advocacy, and a genuine commitment to serving others.”

Drake said she is motivated by knowing that every case, every client, and every opportunity to serve is a chance to make a positive impact.

“My passion for my work is not the law itself, rather my passion is solving problems for people when they feel like no one else can,” Drake said. “The law is simply the tool I have chosen to accomplish that work.”

She said she is motivated not by “winning,” but by “taking a chaotic, emotional situation and bringing clarity, direction, and a path forward to the client.”

She encourages every lawyer, especially new lawyers, to remember that the legal profession is fundamentally one of service.

“The most meaningful work you will do may never appear on your résumé or in a courtroom,” Drake said. “Don't underestimate the impact of small acts of service.”

The Liberty Bell Award acknowledges a non-lawyer or non-legal organization engaged in public service activities that enhance the legal community or are dedicated to the advancement of justice.

Phillips is a manager for Holistic Defense Services with the MSPD, where she oversees a group of advocates placed in MSPD offices throughout the eastern part of the state. The HDS team works alongside lawyers to help clients through resource connection and mitigation, aimed at reducing incarceration and addressing client needs for housing, healthcare, behavioral health treatment, transportation, and more.

Prior to joining MSPD, Phillips established the first pretrial supportive services program in the City of St. Louis.

“I decided to pursue a career working with individuals in the criminal justice system after witnessing firsthand the incredible work that public defenders do every day,” Phillips said.

As a young social worker, working alongside public defenders opened her eyes to the daily injustices clients and the urgent need to protect their rights and promote public safety by addressing root causes. Once she started working in a public defender office, she never wanted to leave, she said.

“None of us do this work for recognition or riches, and our clients are always at the center of our work, rather than ourselves,” Phillips said. “It is humbling, unexpected, and wonderfully surprising to be recognized for showing up every day to work with the best people and the best clients.”

Phillips will accept the Liberty Bell Award in Kansas City during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 16-18.

The Dorothy Kaiser Award is presented to an individual in the field of chemical dependency, recovery, and continuing compassionate care for lawyers or who has made pioneering contributions to the overall well-being of lawyers in Missouri. 

The Warren Welliver Award is presented to an individual who exemplified compassion and concern for lawyers in Missouri during the past year.

Presented in October during National Pro Bono Week, four of the awards are given to an individual lawyer or law firm practicing in each of the following regions: the St. Louis metropolitan area, the Kansas City metropolitan area, and two in greater Missouri. The fifth award is given to a member of the Young Lawyers’ Section.

• The recipient must be an individual lawyer or a law firm.
• A significant part of the service must have occurred during the past year.
• The service must have been provided without compensation to the lawyer or law firm except for reimbursement of actual expenses.
• A significant part of the pro bono service must have been rendered directly to low-income persons (under 200% of the federal poverty level) or as a pro bono volunteer to a public or tax-exempt nonprofit organization which directly serves low-income individuals.
• The recipient has not received the award within the past five years.
• The recipient is a member in good standing of The Missouri Bar.

Purcell, the Purcell Professionalism Award recognizes Missouri lawyers who have shown a high standard of competency, integrity, and civility in professional and civic activities. The Spurgeon Smithson Awards were established in 1976 by bequest of the late Smithson, a Kansas City lawyer. The recognition includes a $2,000 stipend.

The David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award was created by the Missouri Bar Foundation to recognize outstanding achievement in appellate practice by young Missouri lawyers. The award identifies and acknowledges lawyers who have displayed exceptional advocacy skills in court.   

One lawyer from each district of the Missouri Court of Appeals will receive the award, which comes with a $750 stipend. Nominees must be younger than 40 years old as of Sept. 30, 2026, to be eligible.

The Lon O. Hocker Award is given to three young Missouri lawyers who exemplify the qualities of a trial lawyer, including professionalism and high ethical conduct. The awards, established in 1954, are presented at The Missouri Bar’s Annual Meeting, and the recipients receive a $750 stipend.   

Three lawyers selected from St. Louis, Kansas City, and all other counties in the state will receive this honor. Nominees must be younger than 40 years old as of Sept. 30, 2026, to be eligible.

The Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program established this annual award to inspire lawyers and legal employers by the awardees’ examples.

Sweeney graduated from the Saint Louis University School of Law and works as the practice group leader for the Government Solutions & Administrative Law practice group at Lewis Rice. He was previously chief legal counsel for the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

Sweeney works to expand awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure lawyers in need have access to confidential, compassionate help. Much of his work has been about building trust and encouraging colleagues to know that it’s ok to ask for help, he said.

He also strives to ensure the next generation of lawyers have a healthier understanding of balance, resilience, and recovery. He does this by working with firms, bar associations, and law schools to provide more education and resources.

“This award reflects values that I hold close to my heart: compassion, community, and the belief that every lawyer deserves the opportunity to find balance and well-being in their professional and personal lives,” Sweeney said.

He is grateful to be part of a legal community that acknowledges the importance of lawyer well-being and continues to move the conversation forward, he said.

Sweeney encouraged fellow lawyers to remember that being a good lawyer is about far more than the work they do; it’s also about how they care for themselves and those around them. Lawyers serve others best when they are healthy, balanced, and supported, he said.

“Look out for one another,” Sweeney said. “Reach out when you see someone struggling, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Strength in this profession doesn’t come from perfection — it comes from connection, empathy, and resilience. If you make those principles part of your practice from the very beginning, you’ll not only find fulfillment in your career, but you’ll also help make our legal community stronger for everyone.”

Sweeney accepted the James T. Britt Memorial Award as part of the virtual 30th annual Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Conference Oct. 24.

The Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program established this annual award to inspire lawyers and legal employers by the awardees’ examples.

Johnson graduated from the Saint Louis University School of Law and practices family law. Prior to joining Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, P.C., Johnson ran a successful solo law practice. She is also a fellow of the Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys.

She said receiving the Warren Welliver Award is deeply meaningful to her and served as a reminder that caring for the people around you is vital to the practice of law.

“The legal profession is often defined by competition and high pressure, and being recognized for supporting and uplifting colleagues reaffirms the importance of community and connection, two things that are incredibly important to me,” Johnson said.

The honor inspires her continued commitment to fostering a culture where lawyer well-being is prioritized, and every lawyer can feel valued, supported, and seen.

When lawyers prioritize their mental, emotional, and physical health, they not only protect themselves from burnout, but contribute to a more ethical, compassionate, and sustainable profession, Johnson said.

“Supporting one another, building a culture of respect, and normalizing conversations about stress and work-life flow … create a ripple effect that benefits clients, colleagues, and the justice system as a whole,” Johnson said. “Well-being is a shared responsibility, and a cornerstone of a thriving legal community. All lawyers should figure out how they should be contributing to the well-being of themselves and those around them.”

Johnson accepted the Warren Welliver Award as part of the virtual 30th annual Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Conference Oct. 24.

The Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program established this annual award to encourage lawyers and legal employers to be inspired by the awardees’ examples.

Haynes is a lawyer in Mid-Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law. She previously worked with the 13th Judicial Circuit, primarily as a deputy juvenile officer. She has worked for the State of Missouri in various capacities for more than three decades and currently works for the Division of Legal Services for the Department of Social Services.

Haynes has provided and arranged CLEs for hundreds of lawyers but is most proud of instituting a wellness component to the annual CLE for the Division of Legal Services.

“I speak openly about my own recovery journey and share my experience, strength, and hope with those attorneys (and their staff members) who want assistance in order to provide encouragement and information to demystify recovery,” Haynes said.

Haynes’ message is clear: Taking care of yourself so you can give back to others is not selfish — it is necessary. While assertiveness is appropriate and necessary in the legal profession, she has found that altruism and cooperation are often far more important.

“Helping individuals to persevere is what attorneys do,” Haynes said. “Attorneys need to maintain their own sense of balance and well-being in order to accomplish that, and united, we can accomplish more. None of that would be sustainable without my sobriety.”

Haynes accepted the Dorothy Kaiser Award as part of the virtual 30th annual Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Conference Oct. 24.

Jackson 

Jackson is a litigation partner at Weigl Law in St. Louis. He volunteers with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri’s Neighborhood Advocacy program, where he litigates the sale, transfer, or improvement of neglected properties. He works directly with neighborhood residents to empower their communities and restore historic properties to points of pride.  

“There is nothing more rewarding than knowing your efforts are directly helping to improve lives, restore communities, and build something better for all of us,” Jackson said. “Service to others not only draws you closer to your community, it makes you a better, more fulfilled, and more empathetic attorney.” 

Meyer 

Meyer earned his J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law. He founded the firm Meyer Moody LLC in Columbia and is a graduate of the 2021-2022 Leadership Academy class. 

Meyer volunteers with The Missouri Bar’s Fee Dispute Resolution and Complaint Resolution programs, which help lawyers and clients solve disputes in confidential facilitation, mediation, or binding arbitration. He also serves as a special public defender. 

“I believe all lawyers have a responsibility to engage in pro bono work,” Meyer said. “Service to a community can take many forms, and all lawyers have something to offer.” 

No 

No earned her J.D. from Washburn University School of Law and is an associate with Joseph, Hollander & Craft, LLC in Kansas City. She volunteers with Legal Aid of Western Missouri’s Volunteer Attorney Project, providing pro bono legal services for family law matters.  She has also volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. 

No is driven by a desire to provide hope for clients in difficult situations. She is particularly proud of a case where she was able to help a survivor of domestic violence obtain a dissolution of marriage.  

“When we finally began to gain traction in the case, she expressed her relief and how it took a huge burden off her shoulders,” No said. “I will never forget how it felt in that moment to know a difference was being made in her life and well-being.” 

She encourages other lawyers, regardless of where they are in their career, to give back to their communities through pro bono work. 

“I think it can be easy sometimes to forget, especially as you gain years of practice, that legal matters are quite intimidating to most people, and that being an advocate in someone's corner can quite literally change the trajectory of their life,” No said. “Even if you feel that the service you may provide is insubstantial, provide that service. You never know the impact you may have.” 

Spier 

Spier earned her J.D. from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law. She is a lawyer at the Cisar Law Firm in Lake Ozark. A certified guardian ad litem, she focuses her career on family law and criminal cases. She is dedicated to advocating for the best interests of children and vulnerable populations.  

“Your greatest opportunities for growth may lie outside your traditional work. Embrace your professional obligation to your community by finding a pro bono cause that fuels your passion,” Spier said. “Taking on a new area of law to serve a critical need will not only make a profound impact on others but also provide invaluable experience that will shape you as a more effective and compassionate advocate.” 

Webb Elfrink 

Webb Elfrink earned her J.D. from the Saint Louis University School of Law. She co-founded the Webb Law Firm with her father and focuses her practice on workers’ compensation. She also provides general legal services and financial counseling to the public pro bono. 

Webb Elfrink is passionate about helping others and volunteers with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helping provide families and individuals with rent, utility, and food assistance. She said her father taught her that being a lawyer is about serving others. 

“Like my dad, I enjoy showing the next generation that we have an obligation to help others,” Webb Elfrink said. “If we have the ability and resources, we should help.”

The Missouri Bar Financial Services & Insolvency Law Committee presents this award each year to a lawyer who manifests the highest standard of excellence in bankruptcy practice, who contributes distinctively to the development and appreciation of bankruptcy law, and who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of bankruptcy practice or administration. The award is named after prominent Kansas City bankruptcy lawyer Michael R. Roser.

A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, Goldstein is a partner at Spencer Fane in Kansas City, where he concentrates on bankruptcy and reorganization for businesses, representation of secured creditors and creditors’ committees in workouts and bankruptcies, and bond default situations.

Goldstein said it was “an honor” to receive the award, following in the steps of several of his mentors.

“[My] … passion was for the people I worked with young and old, whether at Spencer Fane or other firms, and the results which often got creditors at least some payment and often allowed businesses to continue and employees to keep their jobs,” he said. “Some of the debtor entities that survived had thousands of employees. I’m proud of that.”

Goldstein encouraged new lawyers to be civil to opponents and look for compromise resolutions, while also continuing to be strong advocates for clients. He also suggested new lawyers value the relationships made in the profession.

“Treasure friends and relationships made along the way and always be willing to learn something new,” he said. “Mentor if possible. I’ve made some of my best lifelong friends during my practice.”

Goldstein received the award at the Midwestern Bankruptcy Institute in Kansas City earlier this month.

Boyer 

Boyer, of Joplin, was chosen for his work as YLS liaison to the Board of Governors and chair of the Diversity Committee.  

He attended all Board of Governors meetings and presented changes to the YLS bylaws for approval. He also worked with the Diversity Committee to organize several networking events across the state for all lawyers.  

“I chose Johnny Boyer for a YLS Chair Award because I wanted to recognize how tall of an order I put in front of him this year and how well he stepped up to the plate,” Atchison said. “He is an outstanding leader and wonderful representative of the YLS Council to the BOG and also to our statewide bar.” 

Boyer credited committee members for their support. 

"I am particularly proud of numerous connections that I have made over the past year,” Boyer said. “Whether it was through developing great connections and relationships with the talented and hard-working members of The Missouri Bar staff, my fellow committee members, or the many amazing lawyers across our state that come to our events, I have been blown away by everyone’s determination to serve our clients and the people of our state.” 

Sparks 

Sparks, of St. Louis, was presented with a YLS Chair Award for her work with the Publications Committee and her willingness to help in any capacity. 

As chair of the Publications Committee, Sparks has worked with bar staff and other council members to create videos that inform the public of their rights. The videos use information from ShowMeRights.org, which the committee created in 2017. Aside from her work with the committee, she volunteers for many events and programs throughout the year. 

"Paige has always shown up for the council’s efforts. She is at every swearing in ceremony to make sure we have the ability to swear folks into the federal districts,” Atchison said. “She volunteers every year to present to schools for Constitution Day programming, and she volunteers to present any CLE that the YLS Council asks her to.” 

Sparks said she is proud of the video project’s success and is grateful for the recognition but emphasized that meaningful work is not about awards. 

“It's not about chasing recognition,” she said. “It's about showing up, doing the work, and advocating with purpose every day. If you stay committed and work hard, the results will follow, and people will notice.”

Maggie McConville was presented with the Young Lawyers’ Section JoEllen Engelbart Award at the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar in September. 

The award honors the late JoEllen Engelbart, who was chair-elect of the council when she died in 2021. Engelbart dedicated her career to public service. She was a fierce advocate for special victims through her job as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Jackson County. YLS members at the time described her as an invaluable member of the council who was always willing to help and mentor new members.   

McConville graduated from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law in 2022. After graduating, she returned to her hometown of Chillicothe and joined Chapman and Cowherd, P.C. 

Danielle Atchison, 2024-2025 YLS Council chair, selected McConville for the award because of her dedication to her community and her outreach efforts on the council. McConville chairs the Civic Education and Outreach Committee and has been instrumental in expanding its work. 

“She is always working to make the project she’s in charge of better,” Atchison said. “I am proud to have her on our YLS Council and proud to give her this award.” 

McConville is driven by a desire to increase legal representation in rural Missouri. As a rural lawyer, she serves 13 counties. In many of them, the only lawyers are the judge and prosecutor. 

McConville has seen firsthand the benefits of rural communities and investing in them. She has found many mentors who have helped her along the way. 

“I also know the value of mentorship, as I have had amazing attorneys guide me in my first years of practice,” she said. “Not everyone has that support, so I want to be a resource for others who may have questions or concerns about rural practice.” 

While she didn’t personally know Engelbart, McConville has seen the impact she had on the council.  

“I am honored to be considered in the same class as JoEllen, but I know that any success I have on the council is because of the amazing people I serve with — especially those who have mentored me, just as JoEllen mentored them,” she said. “I look forward to this next year and to all that the council has planned for our great state.”

Bay

A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Law, Bay has represented major corporations in high-stakes litigation for more than 30 years. He recently completed his term as 2024-2025 president of the American Bar Association.

Bay previously served on The Missouri Bar Board of Governors, is a past president of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and co-chaired the Supreme Court of Missouri’s Commission on Racial and Ethnic Fairness. He was also a member of the ABA Board of Governors and is a past chair of the ABA House of Delegates, ABA Section of Litigation, and the ABA Board of Governors’ Finance Committee.

“Bill Bay represents the best of what it means to be a Missouri lawyer — excellence in practice, dedication to service, and strength in the face of adversity,” Dreyer said.

Dreyer added Bay’s leadership is “even more remarkable” when considering his unwavering commitment to the profession following the death of his wife, Angela.

“Despite suffering profound loss, he continued to serve our profession with grace and determination, demonstrating the kind of character that defines the very best among us,” Dreyer said. “His ability to lead while grieving speaks to both his personal strength and his deep commitment to the legal community that has sustained him.”

Robbins

A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, Robbins said his practice has evolved to focus on rural utilities, real estate, business and commercial law, workers' compensation, and probate and estate planning.

“This specialization has allowed me to serve as more than just an attorney to my clients; I've become a partner in building the infrastructure that keeps rural Missouri communities thriving,” he said.

Robbins currently serves on The Missouri Bar Board of Governors and is chair of the Member Contact Information Review Committee and the Special Committee on the Impartiality of the Judiciary. He is also past chair of the bar’s Journal Editorial Board, Client Security Fund, and the Members Services Committee. He participated in the bar’s Leadership Academy and served on the Young Lawyers’ Section Council.

“If you make yourself available and serve with excellence, it's incredible the number of doors that will open,” Robbins said. “Don't wait for the ‘perfect’ opportunity or until you feel fully prepared — start where you are with what you have. Whether it's a local bar committee, a specialty bar, or an open enrollment committee, every form of service matters.” 

Dreyer commended Robbins for his instrumental role in co-chairing the Special Committee on the Impartiality of the Judiciary to help determine The Missouri Bar’s role in defending the judiciary and protecting Missouri’s Non-Partisan Court Plan.

“At a time when judicial independence faces unprecedented challenges, Scott helped navigate these complex issues with wisdom and dedication, ensuring our bar remains a strong defender of the constitutional principles that underpin our justice system,” Dreyer said.

The President’s Awards will be presented in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 17-19.

Waltz, a senior litigation attorney with the St. Louis City Public Defender’s Office, has been a public defender for 21 years, trying over 120 felony jury trials. Waltz described the work as a team effort and said he relies heavily on support staff, investigators, and fellow lawyers in his everyday workload. He also credited his bosses with providing an environment that allows him to succeed.

“I love working for the less fortunate who don't always get a fair opportunity in the criminal justice system,” Waltz said. “My goal for every client I take on is to afford them the best representation and to ensure they are afforded all their constitutional rights to achieve the best outcome under their circumstances.”

Waltz said he was humbled to receive the award.

“I know many of the past recipients whom I respect and look up to,” he said. “I also know a lot of attorneys in the system that are deserving of such recognition. We do not do the work for our clients in order to get accolades or awards. However, it is nice to be recognized for my commitment and dedication to the work.”

The Defender of Distinction award will be presented in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 17-19.

Wm. Locke Thompson and Mark J. Welker will receive the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys’ 2025 Prosecutor of the Year awards for their exemplary skills as prosecutors and their work on MAPA’s legislative committee.

Thompson and Welker co-chair MAPA’s legislative committee, working with lawmakers on policies that strengthen public safety and support Missouri’s prosecutors. This year, the committee was instrumental for revisions to Chapters 491 and 492 RSMo that offer greater protections for children through the court process.

“Thompson and Welker exemplify the best of Missouri prosecution,” MAPA Executive Director Darrell Moore said. “Their work reflects an unwavering commitment to victims, fairness in the courtroom, and a strong dedication to upholding the rule of law.” 

Thompson

Thompson, of Jefferson City, has been prosecuting attorney for Cole County since 2018 and regularly leads training programs for local law enforcement. He is also president-elect of MAPA.

Thompson said his passion for law is driven by a “strong sense of justice, a desire to give a voice to victims, and an interest in advocating for legislation that promotes those values.” 

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my community as a prosecutor,” Thompson added. “Being involved with MAPA adds another layer to that work. It allows me to collaborate with prosecutors across Missouri, advocate for policies that strengthen public safety, and support law enforcement with the tools they need to serve our communities.” 

Welker

Welker, of Jackson, has been prosecuting attorney for Cape Girardeau County since 2018 and is secretary of MAPA. Welker has served on The Missouri Bar Board of Governors since 2022, and he is chair of the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad. 

“I believe prosecution is not only about holding offenders accountable, but also about protecting the vulnerable, ensuring fairness in the courtroom, and giving victims a voice,” Welker said. “This recognition reflects not just my own work, but the dedication of my colleagues, law enforcement partners, and community members who share the commitment to making Missouri a safer place.”

Welker encouraged new lawyers to seek mentors and remember why they chose the legal profession.

“Success as a prosecutor is not measured by wins or losses, but by doing what is right with integrity, fairness, and compassion,” he said. “… Most of all, remember that this work is about service, when you put victims, justice, and community first, recognition will naturally follow.”

Hon. Tracey A. Mason-White

Established by The Missouri Bar Board of Governors in 2004, the awards recognize judges who have inspired others of the judiciary through their integrity and leadership to help advance the administration of justice and provide outstanding public and community services to Missouri residents.  

Mason-White

Mason-White, of Milan, will receive this year’s award posthumously. A graduate of the University of Denver School of Law, Mason-White practiced law in Milan for several years before serving as associate circuit judge for 12 years. She also served on The Missouri Bar Board of Governors. She died on Dec. 15, 2024.

Shelly Dreyer, 2024-2025 Missouri Bar president, said it was both “an honor and a bittersweet moment” to present the McMillian award posthumously to Mason-White.

“Those of us who served alongside Judge Mason-White on our Board of Governors knew her as an exceptional jurist with remarkable character who brought warmth, wisdom, and genuine care to everything she did,” Dreyer said. “Her dedication to justice and service to the bar and the people of Missouri will never be forgotten.”

Van Amburg

A graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Law, Van Amburg was a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals-Eastern District and the 22nd Judicial Circuit before retiring in 2018. Prior to her time on the bench, she focused on labor and employment law for 27 years. She helped found the first all-female law firm in St. Louis — Anderson, Everett Sedey, and Van Amburg — and later joined the law firms of Schuchat, Cook and Werner and Van Amburg, Chackes, Carlson, and Spritzer.

Van Amburg, of Brooklyn, New York, was an adjunct professor at the Saint Louis University School of Law and currently is a mediator and arbitrator for Lexitas alternate dispute resolution services.

Van Amburg says her passion for the law and serving Missourians at both the trial and appellate court levels stemmed from her commitment to the Rule of Law. She enjoyed explaining in oral arguments the importance of democratic principles and describing to jurors how their public service helped “the wheels of justice.”

She added she was honored to be recognized for her contributions to the administration of justice.

“I am so humbled to receive this award, as it is a gift to be honored and remembered by Missouri Bar colleagues a good seven years beyond retirement,” Van Amburg said.

Van Amburg’s advice for lawyers: Don’t just talk — listen.

“It is equally, if not more important and impactful, to listen carefully to what your partners, your clients, your opponents, your jurors, the witnesses, and your judges are saying, or not saying,” she said. “Listening is a difficult skill to master, because as lawyers, we are trained and encouraged to jump in and advocate. But I guarantee that sharpening your listening skills will result in good legal service to your client.”

Walker

A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, Walker is the circuit judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit, presiding over Cole County’s treatment courts and serving as the supervising judge for the pre-trial services program. Walker, of Jefferson City, previously served as associate circuit judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit, municipal judge for Jefferson City, and part-time or interim municipal judge for Russellville, Lohman, and Holts Summit. Prior to the bench, he was city prosecutor for Jefferson City.

Walker has held several leadership roles in the judiciary, including president of the Missouri Municipal & Associate Circuit Judges Association, chair of the Trial Judge Focus Group, and member of the Office of State Courts Administrator’s Circuit Court Budget Committee, Change Management Oversight Team, and Combatting Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence Commission. He has also been faculty for the Missouri Judicial College and New Judge Orientation.

Walker said receiving the McMillian award is “as inspiring as it is humbling.” He added he strives to “live and teach the principles of our constitutions, oath, and the code of judicial conduct.”

“An independent, fair, and impartial judiciary is indispensable to our system of justice,” he said. “You can find that statement, something close to it, or certainly its foundation in state judicial codes and constitutions as well as the U.S. Constitution. The work to assure our independent judiciary remains indispensable and is seen as fair is incumbent upon all of us — judges and lawyers.”

He encouraged new and young lawyers to always remember the Preamble to the Rules of Professional Conduct: “Lawyers play a vital role in the preservation of society.”

“Never lose sight of the weight and worth of that calling,” he said. “Remember your role. Honor your oath. Let it shape not only your work, but your character — guiding every decision, every interaction, and every step you take in service to justice and to others.” 

The McMillian awards will be presented in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 17-19.

For their exceptional professionalism as Missouri lawyers, John W. Grimm and Anne Sallee Mason will receive this year’s Purcell Professionalism Award. 

Named after former Missouri Bar President Martin J. Purcell, the Purcell Professionalism Award recognizes Missouri lawyers who have shown a high standard of competency, integrity, and civility in professional and civic activities. The Missouri Bar Board of Governors and The Missouri Bar Foundation Board of Trustees nominate lawyers, and the board of trustees selects up to two award winners. 

Grimm and Mason will receive their award on Sept. 17 in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference. 

Grimm 

A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, Grimm is a lawyer with the Limbaugh Law Firm in Cape Girardeau. He joined the firm in 1989 before serving as circuit judge for the 32nd Judicial Circuit. He returned to the firm in 2003 after his judicial service. 

Grimm was a member of The Missouri Bar Board of Governors from 2010-2023 and was Missouri Bar president from 2021-2022. He also served on The Missouri Bar Young Lawyers’ Section Council and the Executive Council of the ABA Young Lawyers’ Division.  

“I've been fortunate to travel and meet lawyers from all corners of the state,” Grimm said. “I've learned that there are a lot of very good lawyers in Missouri — some who are affiliated with the largest firms in the country and others who are sole practitioners ... I’m very proud to be a lawyer in Missouri.” 

He encouraged lawyers to connect with their peers and participate in professional and community activities. 

“Lawyers have a lot to offer outside of the office, and there are countless ways to give back to the profession and to the community,” he said.  

While he enjoys the immediate gratification of winning a case or closing a deal, Grimm finds the greatest satisfaction in hearing from clients and families years later about the lasting impact he made. 

“It might have seemed like a minor thing at the time, but doing a good job and treating people with respect can really have a positive, long-term impact,” he said. 

Mason 

A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, Mason is a partner with Neale & Newman in Springfield. She joined the firm in 1989 after clerking for Hon. Douglas W. Green of the Missouri Court of Appeals-Southern District and became the firm’s first female partner in 1993. 

After a stint in banking as a trust officer and in-house counsel, Mason returned to Neale & Newman in 2003, where she continues to practice. 

She served on the boards of the Community Partnership of the Ozarks, the Greene County Estate Planning Council, and the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association, where she chaired the Probate and Trust Committee. 

Mason expressed gratitude for the award and the support she’s received throughout her career. 

“Growing up in a small town, my parents and my community instilled in me the importance of hard work, integrity, helping others, and community service,” she said. “This award reaffirms these values and the importance of practicing law not only with skill, knowledge, and competency, but also with compassion and humility.” 

Mason believes having a good reputation is important for succeeding in law. She encourages other lawyers to consider their reputations and how their actions affect the way others perceive them.  

“Your reputation precedes you in every encounter, whether before a judge, with another lawyer, or with a client ...” she said. “Be trustworthy, always act with integrity, and never compromise your ethics for any reason, under any circumstances.”

Andrew J. Crane, Christine Lesicko, and Renee Suddy will receive this year’s Missouri Bar Foundation David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Awards. 

The David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in appellate practice by three lawyers who are 39 years old or younger. The award is named after the late Hon. David J. Dixon, whose tenacity, professionalism, and judicial skills epitomize outstanding appellate practice.  

Crane, Lesicko, and Suddy will receive their awards Sept. 17 in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference. 

Crane 

A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, Crane is the deputy chief counsel for the Governmental Affairs Section of the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.  

Crane enjoys the broader view required in appellate practice and how it can affect the law. 

“To me, appellate courts still represent the opportunity for lawyers to shape the future of the law with their own diligence, intelligence, and written work,” he said. 

When it comes to his practice, Crane values process over outcome. He is most proud of the cases where he has learned and grown as a lawyer. It is important for him to truly understand the case and how it can affect the client and the community. 

“As lawyers, we see the impacts that those laws have on the people of our communities and work to make sure the laws are applied correctly and fairly,” Crane said. “I am honored to be a part of that effort.” 

Lesicko 

Lesicko earned her law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law. She is the co-chair of the appellate practice group and principal at Watters Wolf Bub Hansmann LLC. She previously clerked for Hon. Edward R. Ardini Jr., of the Missouri Court of Appeals-Western District. 

Lesicko enjoys appellate advocacy because she can be creative while working within the confines of specific rules and records. She said she also sees it as an opportunity to ensure that litigants get a “fair shake” in the lower courts.  

“I view my role as an appellate advocate as making sure the system works as fairly as possible for everyone involved in a case,” she said. 

Lesicko encourages other lawyers to work hard and be the best advocates they can for their clients. 

“You never know where your career will take you, but being diligent for your clients and collegial with opposing counsel and other attorneys in your practice area will go a long way to gaining a good reputation and getting opportunities,” she said. 

Suddy 

A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, Suddy is an assistant attorney general in the Criminal Appeals Section at the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.  

Suddy views her role as an opportunity to help shape people’s experience with the legal system.  

“When parties see us working to reach the right result, in the right way, it builds trust in our system, which is so important,” she said. “Hopefully, people leave feeling heard, feeling like they were treated fairly, and understanding the process a little better.” 

She enjoys being able to work on both sides in her practice area to maintain a well-rounded perspective and fully understand problems so she can help others comprehend them. She encourages other lawyers to keep learning and build trust in their professional judgment. 

“Good judgment comes from information, perspective, and often a little humility ...” she said. “The more you know, the better you will understand the issues in front of you. Challenge yourself early and get outside your comfort zone.”

For her inspirational work in family law, Michelle J. Spirn received the Roger P. Krumm Family Law Award at

Presented by The Missouri Bar Family Law Committee, the Roger P. Krumm Family Law Award honors a family law lawyer who has demonstrated an exceptional degree of competence, skill, integrity, commitment, and dedication toward the improvement and advancement of the practice of family law and the children and families involved in family law matters.

Over the course of her 29-year career, Spirn has practiced solo and in various firms. In 2017, she founded Spirn Family Law, where she represents clients in divorce and divorce-related litigation. A graduate of the Washington University School of Law, Spirn is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and is immediate past president of the Missouri chapter. She has also served on the 21st Circuit Judicial Commission and the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel’s Region X Disciplinary Committee.

Spirn encouraged new family law lawyers to develop and maintain relationships with other legal professionals within their practice. She added her lawyer friends are “some of the smartest and funniest people I know.”

“In the course of your career, your family law colleagues will be there …” she said. “Those friendships are priceless and go a long way toward managing the stress that comes with the practice.”

Kaitlynn M. Donnelly, Bryan Mathews, and John P. Schlesinger will receive this year’s Lon O. Hocker Awards for their commendable work as trial lawyers. 

The Missouri Bar Foundation awards the Lon O. Hocker Award to three trial lawyers under the age of 40 who demonstrate zealousness, honor, strength, courtesy, confidence, and respect. Established in 1954, the award is named after Lon O. Hocker, a lawyer who practiced in St. Louis for more than 50 years and was a well-respected trial lawyer.  

Donnelly, Mathews, and Schlesinger will receive their awards on Sept. 17 in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference. 

Donnelly 

Donnelly is an assistant prosecuting attorney in Platte County. A graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law, she previously worked with the Missouri State Public Defender System as a public defender.  

Donnelly is passionate about providing a voice to crime victims, especially children. 

“It's a privilege to be trusted to tell a victim's story, and I'm honored to carry that responsibility every time I step into the courtroom,” she said. 

Donnelly said she seeks to be compassionate and effective in her pursuit of justice for victims.  

“My goal is always to restore a sense of safety to victims and their families,” she said. “Knowing that the work I do on a daily basis can bring justice and closure to even one victim is what keeps me committed and driven.” 

Mathews 

Mathews is the family sexual violence prosecutor in Franklin County. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and began his career as a criminal defense lawyer before joining the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in 2023. 

He is driven by a desire to help survivors and build relationships with them over the course of their cases. 

“Getting through a trial where you spend anywhere from three to five days with a family and you can look back at them at the conclusion of the trial and know you did everything you could for them, regardless of the outcome, there is a lot of pride in that,” he said. “To see the relief in the parent's eyes that this process is over, and in the fortunate cases where they tell me ‘thank you,’ I think of myself as a parent to two young girls and know I would want someone who takes this as seriously as I do to be the advocate for my own child.” 

For Mathews, this award recognizes the work he and his team do to help survivors find justice. 

“It is a reflection of our team's dedication, and it highlights decisions to spend long hours and sometimes weekends away from our families to make sure we are doing everything we can for our survivor,” he said.  

Schlesinger 

A graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Law, Schlesinger is the deputy chief trial attorney for the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. 

He has spent majority of his legal career as a prosecutor and said he is proud to represent victims. 

“While the work can be challenging, it is a privilege to stand up for victims, seek justice, and help restore a sense of safety to those who have been harmed,” Schlesinger said.

Mary Fox, Barbara Glesner Fines, and Hon. Sherri B. Sullivan will be recognized for their contributions toward increasing the quality of justice. 

Established in 1976, The Missouri Bar Foundation Spurgeon Smithson Awards recognize judges, law teachers, and/or lawyers who have provided outstanding services toward the increase and diffusion of justice. The Missouri Bar Foundation Board of Trustees selects the recipients, who each receive a $2,000 stipend.  

The three recipients will receive their awards on Sept. 17 in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference. 

Fox 

Fox, of Clayton, earned her J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law and spent her career helping low-income Missourians.  

Fox served as director of the Missouri State Public Defender System from January 2020 until her retirement in June 2025. She previously worked as managing attorney for the St. Louis City Trial Office, hearing officer for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division, and commissioner for the 21st Judicial Circuit.  

Fox said she is most proud of creating the Holistic Defense Services program at MSPD, which supports client advocacy by connecting clients to resources and services to improve both case and life outcomes.   

“HDS advocacy results in less pretrial detention and incarceration — saving taxpayers money — and improved stability for clients, which improves their lives, the lives of their families, and increases community safety,” Fox said. “The continued work of HDS will allow clients to escape from criminal legal system involvement and eventually reduce the number of criminal prosecutions in the state — a positive step for all Missourians.” 

Glesner Fines 

Glesner Fines, of Kansas City, earned her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin School of Law and her Master of Laws from Yale Law School. She is a professor and dean emerita at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, where she has been a faculty member since 1986. She was executive associate dean from 2013-2017.  

Glesner Fines has focused on professional ethics and formation. She has taught more than 40 courses, created multiple programs, and co-founded the school’s Academic Support Program, the UMKC Child and Family Law Emphasis, the Solo & Small Firm Lawyering Program, and the UMKC/LAWMO Self Help Clinic. 

She said she is honored to represent the law school faculty who work to advance justice by helping students become lawyers committed to advancing understanding and development of the legal system. 

“If my teaching, research, and service have played even a small part in advancing justice, I am privileged beyond measure,” she said. 

Sullivan 

Sullivan, of St. Louis, earned her J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law. She began her judicial career in 1989 as an associate circuit judge. She was appointed circuit judge in the 22nd Judicial Circuit in 1994 and joined the Missouri Court of Appeals-Eastern District in 1999. She served as chief judge in 2003-2004 and 2021-2022 before retiring in 2023. 

Sullivan encourages all lawyers to remember the privilege of their role. 

“As we swore in our oath of office, it is our responsibility and duty to maintain the dignity of our profession and to ensure the continuation of the rule of law and the balance of the three equal branches of government,” she said.

In honor of her dedication to helping the community, Jessica R. Langley will receive this year’s Missouri Bar Young Lawyers’ Section Tom Cochran Community Service Award. 

The Tom Cochran Community Service Award recognizes a member of The Missouri Bar whose community service and professionalism have enhanced their Missouri community. The award is named after Thomas D. Cochran, whose commitment and contributions to the practice of law and his community inspired generations of lawyers.  

Langley earned her Juris Doctor from Arizona Summit Law School in 2014. After graduating, she returned to her hometown of Kansas City and began her career as a judicial law clerk in Jackson County. She is a certified mediator, Guardian ad Litem, court appointed special advocate, and a big sister volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters.  

Langley said she is proud to be recognized for her support of both legal and community-based organizations. 

 “Giving back in meaningful ways — whether through mentorship, legal advocacy, civil engagement, or community development — is a core part of who I am, and I’m honored to be acknowledged for that commitment,” Langley said. 

Driven by her belief that strong communities start with strong families, she has dedicated her volunteer work to serving families and children in her community. 

“I feel called to support and uplift the children in my community. Whether that’s through my legal work, my volunteer efforts, or simply showing up when it matters most, I know the impact that I can make in helping others,” she said. “Knowing I can play even a small part in helping a child feel safe, heard, and/or valued is what keeps me going.” 

Langley is most proud of her work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She has been involved for nearly a decade and said the impact it has had on her life is immeasurable, as what started as a volunteer opportunity turned into a meaningful relationship. 

“Watching my little grow, overcome challenges, and become their own person has been an incredible privilege,” she said. “It’s a reminder that consistently showing up can make a lasting difference in someone’s life. What I didn’t expect was just how much it would change mine, too.” 

To Langley, receiving this award felt like a reflection of her mother’s legacy. Growing up, she watched her mom be heavily involved in the community and saw how she touched the lives of many. 

She encourages other lawyers to “suit up and show up.” 

“Putting real sweat equity back into your community, whether through pro bono work, mentorship, or investing your time, doesn’t just make you a better lawyer, it makes your community stronger,” she said.

The annual Diversity Champion Award recognizes a lawyer who demonstrates a true commitment to an inclusive legal profession which reflects the diverse constituencies that Missouri lawyers serve, and achieves gains toward increasing the retention, advancement, and promotion of lawyers across multiple dimensions of diversity. The Missouri Bar Board of Governors established the Diversity Champion Award in 2022 to encourage lawyers, legal employers, and broader communities to be inspired by their example.

Phillips is the practice group leader for the Labor & Employment Practice Group at Lewis Rice, focusing on labor and employment practice, as well as commercial, pharmaceutical, and media disputes. A graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Law, Phillips serves as vice chair of Lewis Rice’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee and is a member of the firm’s Recruiting Committee.

“Championing diversity and inclusion isn’t just about representation — it’s about equity, dignity, and a recognition that we all have to do our part to ensure an inclusive profession,” Phillips said.

While on the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, Phillips has helped implement a fellowship program to provide an opportunity for law students who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion to gain hands-on law firm experience and mentorship. The committee also implemented a college internship program designed for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities interested in the legal profession.

“I’ve always been driven by a deep desire to do good — to use the tools and skills I have as an attorney not just to serve clients well, but to serve justice in a broader sense,” she said. “And, for me, this means doing my part to help eliminate historic barriers to entry into our profession through mentorship, intentionality, and advocacy.”

Phillips will accept the Diversity Champion Award in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 17-19.

Named after the late long-time member and former chair of the Journal Editorial Board, Oliver Rasch, this award recognizes outstanding substantive articles appearing in the Journal.

Altman is an adjunct professor at Avila University in Kansas City. Before retiring in 2016, he was the special education lead attorney and compliance officer for Kansas City Public Schools and the Title IX coordinator for the Kansas City School District.  In addition, Altman is a member of the Advisory Board of Project Innovation for Mental Health Enhancement (PRIME), a project funded by the United States Department of Education, and he received Avila University’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Ambassador Award. Altman graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law.

In his article, Altman outlines the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 did not violate the Constitution and Congress did not exceed its authority when enacting it. But while Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Justice Neil Gorsuch explained the reasoning for upholding the ICWA, Altman analyzes how future claims that the ICWA violates the equal protection clause may potentially hold up in court following Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College.

“Words really can't express how honored I am to receive this award,” Altman said. “I hope lawyers understand the contributions [Native Americans] have made to the United States and the importance that the tribes can grow and its members have an equal opportunity to interact with non-[Native Americans] without prejudice or preconceived notions … that are not accurate.”

Altman will accept the Rasch Award in Branson during the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference, Sept. 17-19.

Altman advised other lawyers to consider submitting articles to the Journal of The Missouri Bar. While the initial proposed article may not be published immediately, he said, lawyers should learn from the famous inventor, Thomas Edison, who said, “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

Presented in October during National Pro Bono Week, four of the awards are given to an individual lawyer or law firm practicing in each of the following regions: the St. Louis metropolitan area, the Kansas City metropolitan area, and two in greater Missouri. The fifth award is given to a member of the Young Lawyers’ Section.

Nomination criteria:

- The recipient must be an individual lawyer or a law firm.

- A significant part of the service must have occurred during the past year.

- The service must have been provided without compensation to the lawyer or law firm except for reimbursement of actual expenses.

- A significant part of the pro bono service must have been rendered directly to low-income persons (under 200% of the federal poverty level) or as a pro bono volunteer to a public or tax-exempt nonprofit organization which directly serves low-income individuals.

- The recipient has not received the award within the past five years.

- The recipient is a member in good standing of The Missouri Bar.

- Impact is measurable
Demonstrated impact of diversity initiatives on promotional opportunities, professional growth and development, lawyer engagement, workplace culture, and retention and recruitment of law students and lawyers in a way that can be measured or assessed for success (statistically and/or anecdotally).

- Demonstrates an intentional commitment
Recognized for ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives; highlight activities that contribute to inclusion efforts in the workplace, legal profession and/or broader societal diversity and inclusion issues; skills and opportunities that individuals utilize to lead by example. Recipients actively work to create inclusive environments where everyone has access, feels valued, and has meaningful opportunities to thrive.

The E. A. Richter Award recognizes remarkable contributions by Missouri teachers, administrators, and schools to citizenship education efforts in the state. Past winners include secondary and elementary teachers; college professors; and school civics, citizenship, government, and law programs. The Missouri Bar Advisory Committee for Citizenship Education established the award in honor of E.A. “Wally” Richter, long-time Missouri Bar law-related education department director.

The Dr. Warren H. Solomon Civic Virtue Award honors individuals who embody civic virtue and have promoted it among Missouri teachers and students. Solomon, a social studies curriculum specialist with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education who advocated for law-related education among Missouri teachers.

The Spurgeon Smithson Awards were established in 1976 by bequest of the late Smithson, a Kansas City lawyer. The recognition includes a $2,000 stipend.

The David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award was created by The Missouri Bar Foundation to recognize outstanding achievement in appellate practice by young Missouri lawyers. The award identifies and acknowledges lawyers who excel in advocacy skills as observed by judges within Missouri's three appellate districts, the Supreme Court of Missouri, and/or the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.  

One lawyer from each district of the Missouri Court of Appeals will receive the award, which comes with a $750 stipend. Nominees must be younger than 40 years old as of Sept. 30, 2025, to be eligible.

The Welliver award is presented to a member who has best exemplified compassion and concern for lawyers in Missouri during the last year. 

Gust is the probate commissioner for the Probate Court of St. Louis County. 

“By his willingness to recognize and discuss well-being initiatives openly, he promotes an atmosphere that reduces stigma and creates a healthier environment for everyone, ensuring that no lawyer feels alone in their struggle,” his nominators said. 

They added that the compassionate approach Gust takes offers a refreshing change in a field where pressure is the norm, deadlines loom, and the emotional toll can be overwhelming. 

“His nomination is not solely a recognition of his professional excellence but is an opportunity for all of us within the legal profession to reflect on the importance of empathy, understanding, and support,” the nominators said. 

Gust received the award during the Nov. 1 annual MOLAP Conference in Jefferson City.

Gust said he was honored by the award and kind words, noting the area of probate law has a large mental health component. 

There are situations he handles involving guardianships and civil commitments to psychiatric wards, and many of these individuals have mental illnesses.

Focusing on mental health has made a difference for the citizens he works with, Gust said. 

“One of the things that I noticed is the difference it was making to see people who were able to go in, and … they would get that help, they would get medication …” Gust said. 

Medication helped them move on with their lives after living with a mental health issue for years, Gust said. Being able to talk to others about their mental health has helped them live fuller lives, he added.

Speaking openly about mental health can also benefit lawyers. 

“I just try to do my best and … my idea is that attorneys can be able to speak openly about this too because it’s such a difficult job in and of itself,” Gust said. “And we all have our own challenges, whether or not we’re attorneys. So, I’ve always thought it’s very important to be able to speak openly about this stuff.”

MOLAP provides a professional, confidential counseling program for members of The Missouri Bar, immediate family members who reside with them, and law students.
