ABA Young Lawyers’ Division discusses resolutions during midyear meeting
Seven members of The Missouri Bar’s Young Lawyers’ Section Council attended the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Midyear Meeting Jan. 30-Feb. 3 in Phoenix, Arizona.
The event included awards celebrations, luncheons, CLEs, oral arguments from the U.S. Army Court of Appeals, and more.
A highlight of the event was the Assembly (legislative body of the YLD) meeting, where they discussed and passed resolutions.
The New York City Bar Association presented a resolution proposing a modification to the ethics code the Supreme Court of The United States previously adopted to allow more leniency when interpreting past acts and the code of conduct.
The Virgin Islands Bar Association presented a resolution opposing investigation and prosecution by the federal government for activities protected by the First Amendment, including advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and accessibility policies.
The delegation also passed a resolution to allow lawyers participating in mock trials to receive up to 6 CLE credit hours for their work.
“This is a really big deal because it is a very time-consuming commitment to participate that they previously received no compensation for other than feeling good about it,” said Paige Sparks, a Missouri delegate. “This will hopefully incentivize more lawyers to participate in mock trial.”
