Dialing 988 now connects callers to Suicide Prevention Lifeline

988.

That’s the new number those in a suicide-related crisis can call to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While the traditional 800-273-8255 number will still function as it did before, the shorted 988 offers a quicker connection option.

Across the nation, including in Missouri, lawyers are at an increased risk for suicide compared to those outside the profession. After cancer and heart disease, suicide is the third most common cause of death among lawyers. Despite these facts, few lawyers are educated about depression and suicide prevention.

Depression is treatable. For free, confidential screening, please contact the Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program at 800-688-7859. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength and hope.

If you are thinking about suicide, know someone who is, or need to talk with someone, we encourage you to immediately call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
