To honor the lives and achievements of deceased members, The Missouri Bar solicits additional information about these men and women from family members or printed obituaries. When that information is not provided or is otherwise unavailable, the Journal will print only the deceased’s name, city of residence, and date of death.

Edward C. Ahlheim, age 84, of St. Charles, on May 9, 2021. Ahlheim graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1967.

Patrick F. Andre, age 56, of Brentwood, on July 28, 2020. He served as the chief legal counsel to The Home Loan Expert. Andre graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1990.

Bernard L. Balkin, age 95, of Kansas City, on Jan. 23, 2021. Balkin established Achtenberg, Sandler and Balkin – later known as Sandler Balkin Hellman & Weinstein – before joining Gilliland & Hayes. He graduated from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, MA, and joined The Missouri Bar in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy.

Herbert Theodore “Ted” Diekemper Jr., age 70, of St. Louis, on June 4, 2021. Diekemper joined The Missouri Bar in 1982.

Virginia Dunmire, age 72, of Prairie Village, KS, on April 23, 2020. She worked at Spencer Fane Britt and Brown Law Firm before moving to the legal department at Commerce Bank. She also served as Virginia Law Weekly’s first female editor. Dunmire graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville and joined The Missouri Bar in 1979.

Thomas L. Duty, age 86, of St. Joseph, on April 27, 2021. He served as Buchanan County prosecuting attorney before opening his private law office, where he practiced for more than 50 years. Duty graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1960.

Erin Elliott, age 49, of Columbia, MO, on Feb. 5, 2021. She was a lawyer who specialized in government relations, with an emphasis on medical issues. Elliott graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1998.

Steven H. Goodman, age 74, of Kansas City, on May 8, 2019. Goodman practiced at Morris, Larsen, King, Stamper & Bold, and then at Shughart, Thompson & Kilroy. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor and joined The Missouri Bar in 1970.

Virginia C. Gross, age 56, of Kansas City, on Dec. 9, 2020. She was a lawyer at Polsinelli law firm for 25 years, where she focused on counseling nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations. She graduated from the University of Texas School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1994.

William G. Hammond, age 65, of Overland Park, KS, on Dec. 23, 2020. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame School of Law in Indiana and joined The Missouri Bar in 1982.

Richard J. Haskins, age 56, of Las Vegas, NV, on July 4, 2020. He held several positions with Station Casinos and its parent company, Red Rock Resorts, over 25 years, including general counsel, vice president, executive vice president, and president. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in Lawrence and joined The Missouri Bar in 1991.

Gerard “Gerry” F. Hempstead, age 77, of Chesterfield, on April 10, 2021. Hempstead joined The Missouri Bar in 1969.

Joseph Howlett, age 87, of Brentwood, on April 20, 2021. Howlett practiced law in St. Louis for nearly 60 years. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1961.

Jason Lorne Kennedy, age 50, of Chicago, IL, on June 5, 2020. He was a lawyer at Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney. Kennedy graduated from Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington and joined The Missouri Bar in 2013.

Karen Lipschultz Knopf, age 78, of St. Louis, on Feb. 17, 2021. She served as in-house counsel at Monsanto and later corporate counsel for Solutia Inc. Knopf graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1980.

William B. Korth, age 90, of Madeira Beach, FL, on March 19, 2020. Korth worked as a trial lawyer in Kansas City for 30 years. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1963. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 40 years.

Edward Lander, age 84, of St. Louis, on June 4, 2021. Lander joined The Missouri Bar in 1961.

Gerald Nadler, age 77, of Jacksonville, FL, on April 19, 2021. He joined The Missouri Bar in 1974.

William Stephen Nixon, age 69, of Lake Lotawana, on April 11, 2021. Nixon served on the Jackson County Circuit Court for more than 14 years, including a stint as presiding judge, and then following retirement served as the Jackson County Counselor. He also was an active member of the Missouri Court Automation Committee (MCA). He joined The Missouri Bar in 1975.

Joshana Offenbach, age 49, of Kansas City, on May 17, 2021. She worked at the Kansas City Board of Healing Arts and Scharnhorst Ast Kennard Griffin PC. Offenbach graduated from Washburn School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 2008.

Kevin E. Phillips, age 65, of Cape Girardeau, on March 13, 2021. Phillips owned Kevin E. Phillips Attorney at Law and served primarily as a family law lawyer. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1981.

Richard R. Russell, age 92, of St. Louis, on March 17, 2021. He sold life insurance for a few years before founding his own law practice. Russell graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1954.

Paul J. Simon, age 87, of Ballwin, on June 6, 2021. He served as a judge for the Missouri Court of Appeals-Eastern District. He also was a private practice lawyer and special assistant attorney general, as well as a Missouri state representative. Simon joined The Missouri Bar in 1960.

Charles Frederic Speer, age 67, of Kansas City, on April 11, 2021. He opened Speer Law Firm, where he practiced mainly environmental law. Speer graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in Lawrence, KS, and joined The Missouri Bar in 1990.

William R. Thomson, age 81, of Maryville, on June 8, 2021. He worked at Beavers, Thomson & Beavers Law Firm before joining Nodaway Valley Bank, where he retired as president. Thomson served on The Missouri Bar’s first Young Lawyers’ Section. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1966. Thomson served in the U.S. Air Force.

John R. Watson, age 60, of St. Charles, on Aug. 28, 2020. He joined the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and served as Gov. Jay Nixon’s chief of staff for nearly 18 years. He also served as interim state auditor, executive director of the Missouri State Employees Retirement System, and a private practice lawyer. Watson graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1993.

Kent M. Wells, age 66, of Alexandria, VA, on Oct. 9, 2020. He served as vice president of federal relations at AT&T in Washington, D.C. Wells graduated from George Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1982.

John “Dale” Wiley, age 49, of Crane, on March 20, 2021. He served as a foreclosure lawyer throughout Missouri. Wiley graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1998.

William H. Wyne Jr., age 101, of St. Louis, on Oct. 15, 2020. He joined The Missouri Bar in 1950 and served as a lawyer for Creve Coeur. Wyn served in the U.S. Army Air Force.
