The Journal of The Missouri Bar publishes items in the "In Memoriam" section as they are received. To honor the lives and achievements of deceased members, The Missouri Bar solicits additional information about these men and women from family members or printed obituaries. When that information is not provided or is otherwise unavailable, the Journal will print only the deceased’s name, city of residence, and date of death.

John F. Brown, age 86, of Houston, TX, on December 14, 2018. Brown served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1971. He spent 61 years in the natural gas industry.

Nicholas Byron, age 89, of Edwardsville, IL, on August 4, 2019. Following time in the U.S. Army, Byron attended Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1958. He held several elected offices, including circuit judge for the 3rd Judicial Circuit Court in Madison County, IL.

Elwyn L. Cady Jr., age 94, of Chicago, in March 2020. Cady attended Tulane Law School and joined The Missouri Bar in 1951. He was on the law school faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, as well as the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Cady served in Europe during WWII.

Felix Callis, age 84, of Granite City, IL, on September 25, 2019. Callis graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1959 and served as a trial lawyer for nearly 60 years.

Liam Coonan, age 83, of San Antonio, TX, on September 8, 2018. Coonan emigrated from Ireland to the United States to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. Coonan earned his law degree from Seton Hall University and later practiced in St. Louis.

Robert E. Cox, age 68, of Clinton, on February 10, 2020. Cox received his law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He was the assistant prosecutor for Henry County from 1975-77 and prosecuting attorney from 1977-79. He then practiced law with Poague, Wall, Cox & Adams for more than 40 years.

Michael Gibbons, age 95, of St. Louis, on October 15, 2019. Gibbons attended Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

James W. Humphrey Jr., age 89, of Leawood, KS, on May 2, 2019. Humphrey served in Korea with the U.S. Army and earned his law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Edward W. Hurley, age 93, of Virginia Beach, VA, on April 30, 2019. After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, Hurley graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1952.

Patricia Kampsen, age 66, of Chicago, IL, on December 7, 2018. Kampsen graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and practiced in the area for several years before moving to Chicago in 1997.

Charles E. Kopman, age 84, of St. Louis, on April 1, 2020. Kopman graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1961 and practiced law for 60 years.

Sander Korein, age 86, of St. Louis, on September 9, 2018. Korein graduated from Washington University School of Law and served in the U.S. Army. He was senior partner of Carr, Korein et. al. from 1973 to 2003. He then formed the law firm of Korein Tillery.

Rudolph Kuchan, age 93, of Shawnee Mission, KS, on October 24, 2018. Kuchan served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Kuchan practiced commercial law and retired from Berman, DeLeve, Kuchan & Chapman in 1995.

William LaRue, age 84, of Overland Park, KS, on October 3, 2019. LaRue graduated from Harvard Law School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a lawyer for 35 years before retiring in 1998.

Bernard Levine, age 90, of Mission, KS, on February 13, 2018. Levine joined The Missouri Bar in 1955.

James H. Marsh Jr., age 87, of Tucson, AZ, on November 26, 2019. Marsh attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and moved to Washington, DC, in 1968. There, he was a partner in several patent firms. Marsh was a member of the U.S. Army.

Jacob May Jr., age 89, of Kansas City, on September 30, 2018. May practiced real estate law and spent much of his career as partner with Spencer Fane Britt & Browne. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Kenneth J. Roeh, age 90, of Madison, WI, on November 7, 2019. Roeh attended law school at Valparaiso University and joined The Missouri Bar in 1957. Roeh practiced in the St. Louis area for several years and served in the U.S. Army.

Hon. Charles A. Shaw, age 76, of St. Louis, on April 12, 2020. Shaw attended law school at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His legal career included time at the National Labor Relations Board, the Lashly Carothers law firm, and as an assistant United States attorney. In 1987, he was appointed circuit judge for the City of St. Louis, and in 1993 he was appointed to the U.S. District Court.

Donald B. Steele, age 91, of Atlanta, GA, on July 11, 2019. Steele attended the University of Iowa College of Law and practiced with Morrison, Hecker, Buck, Cozad & Rogers in Kansas City. Steele actively participated in The Missouri Bar’s Commercial Law Committee. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

William R. Stewart, age 68, of Brentwood, on March 14, 2020. He joined The Missouri Bar in 1987.

Henry Stoltz Jr., age 73, of Columbia, on January 29, 2020. Stoltz attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1977. He was employed at the City of Columbia law department for 35 years. Stoltz served in the U.S. Air Force.

Ron Sweet, age 65, of Columbia, on April 6, 2020. Sweet graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law in 1991 and soon joined Oliver Walker Wilson, LLC. In 2010, he established his own practice, and in 2015 he joined the Boone County Counselor’s office as an assistant county counselor.

Robert E. Wieland, age 95, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, on April 29, 2020. Wieland attended Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1951. He practiced law for many years and retired as an administrative law judge for the State of Missouri Division of Workers Compensation. Wieland served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.

Pacey Lee Wohlner, age 84, of Kansas City, on April 6, 2020. Wohlner joined The Missouri Bar in 1961.
