To honor the lives and achievements of deceased members, The Missouri Bar solicits additional information about these men and women from family members or printed obituaries. When that information is not provided or is otherwise unavailable, the Journal will print only the deceased’s name, city of residence, and date of death.
Gena J. Awerkamp, age 73, of Quincy, IL, on April 2, 2020. Awerkamp joined The Missouri Bar in 1982 after attending the University of Missouri School of Law. She practiced in both Columbia and Quincy, most recently with Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell.
Thomas DeGroot, age 63, of O’Fallon, on August 10, 2020. DeGroot graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1982.
Steven Robert Dottheim, age 71, of Jefferson City, on August 12, 2020. Dottheim earned his law degree at Duke University and joined The Missouri Bar in 1978. He spent his career as the chief deputy general counsel of the Missouri Public Service Commission.
John R. Essner, age 69, of Clayton, on August 14, 2020. Essner obtained his law degree from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1976. For more than 20 years, Essner was a staff attorney for Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, eventually becoming the first director of its Volunteer Lawyers Program. He was appointed associate circuit judge in 1999.
Donald K. Gerard, age 83, of Lake Ozark, on February 22, 2020. Gerard attended Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1964. Later in his career, he served as a judge in the municipal court of the City of Ladue.
William M. Hannay III, age 75, of Chicago, IL, on August 11, 2020. Hannay joined The Missouri Bar in 1974 and practiced with Schiff Hardin.
Steve Higgins, age 73, of St. Louis, on May 11, 2020. Higgins served in Vietnam and earned his law degree from Saint Louis University. He was previously a U.S. attorney, and more recently practiced with Thompson Coburn.
Nancy R. Kistler, age 59, of St. Louis, on May 20, 2020. Kistler joined The Missouri Bar in 1986 and was deputy city counselor for the City of St. Louis. She worked for the city for 30 years.
Montana Koenig, age 29, of Kansas City, on August 11, 2020. Koenig graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and practiced with DiPasquale Moore.
Charles W. Kullmann, age 99, of St. Peters, on August 8, 2020. Kullmann served in World War II and joined The Missouri Bar in 1955.
Erica B. Leisenring, age 68, of St. Louis, on April 7, 2020. Leisenring graduated from Antioch College School of Law and moved to St. Louis to serve as an assistant public defender. She later practiced with Stewart, Mittleman, Heggie & Henry.
Gearald J. Mossinghoff, age 84, of Arlington, VA, on March 20, 2020. He graduated from Washington University School of Law in 1961 and focused on intellectual property law. Additionally, Mossinghoff was a lecturer at the George Washington University, American University, and George Mason University.
Timothy O’Leary, age 49, of St. Louis, on March 16, 2020. O’Leary joined The Missouri Bar in 1996 and was a shareholder in Sandberg Phoenix.
Isadore I. Ozar, age 93, of Leawood, KS, on July 30, 2020. Ozar joined The Missouri Bar in 1950.
Alan H. Rosenbloum, age 79, of Gulf Breeze, FL, on November 26, 2019. Rosenbloum joined The Missouri Bar in 1964.
Richard Samuel Rosenthal, age 86, of Chesterfield, on August 6, 2020. Rosenthal graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and joined The Missouri Bar in 1958.
Richard C. Scott, age 77 of Hurst, TX, on July 15, 2020. Scott served in the U.S. Army, then attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1971. He worked mainly in labor relations, including time with Eastern Airlines, Western Airlines, Delta Airlines, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.
Charles M.M. Shepherd, age 89, of Frontenac, on October 30, 2019. Shepherd earned his law degree from Washington University and joined The Missouri Bar in 1953. He was in private practice for more than 60 years in Clayton. Shepherd served in the Korean War.
Milton D. Skeens, age 87, of Kansas City, on January 8, 2020. Skeens served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1967. Skeens practiced in both public and private settings.
Ray Sandy Sutton Sr., age 82, of Kansas City, on September 2, 2020. Sutton graduated from Washburn School of Law in 1966 and practiced in a variety of firms before joining Interstate Bakeries Corporation, from which he retired in 2002 after serving as its general counsel. Sutton served in the United States Army Reserve.
Gregory B. Vatterott, age 77, of St. Louis, on August 5, 2020. Vatterott earned his law degree from Saint Louis University, as well as an LL.M. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He practiced at CF Vatterott, most recently as chairman.
Stephen C. Wilson, age 67, of Cape Girardeau, on July 21, 2020. Wilson joined The Missouri Bar in 1982. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
