To honor the lives and achievements of deceased members, The Missouri Bar solicits additional information about these men and women from family members or printed obituaries. When that information is not provided or is otherwise unavailable, the Journal will print only the deceased’s name, city of residence, and date of death.

Sharon G. Ballin, age 68, of Chicago, IL, on Jan. 28, 2021. Ballin joined The Missouri Bar in 1991.

David Miller Bays, age 60, of Dallas, TX, on Aug. 13, 2021. Bays graduated from Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock, TX, and joined The Missouri Bar in 2016. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Eugene Kenyon Buckley, age 91, of St. Louis, on Oct. 19, 2020. Buckley served as a lawyer for 68 years at Buckley & Buckley, LLC, focusing on civil litigation, insurance coverage, and insurance defense. He also served as a mediator in civil cases in state and federal courts, as well as provided lectures. Buckley received The Missouri Bar Foundation’s 1996 Purcell Professionalism Award. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1952.

Donald L. Dickerson, age 89, of Cape Girardeau, on May 20, 2021. Dickerson practiced as a trial lawyer for more than 50 years. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1959. Dickerson served in the U.S. Army.

Paul R. Diekhoff, age 61, of St. Louis, on April 15, 2021. Diekhoff was an assistant city counselor for the City of St. Louis. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1993.

Melanie Slade Fannin, age 70, of Driftwood, TX, on June 3, 2021. Fannin joined The Missouri Bar in 1984.

Richard J. Fredrick, age 85, of Paris, on July 12, 2021. Fredrick most recently worked in his private practice in Paris and Wellsville. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1972.

Caroline M. French, age 95, of Kansas City, on Nov. 24, 2020. French joined The Missouri Bar in 1966.

William J. Garvey, age 82, of Indianapolis, IN, on Feb. 25, 2021. He worked in the shopping center development industry until he retired. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1964.

Charles E. Hamilton, age 86, of O’Fallon, IL, on Oct. 15, 2020. Hamilton practiced law in St. Louis for about a decade before practicing throughout Illinois. He served as an assistant state’s attorney, special assistant attorney general, commissioner, and vice-chairman of the Bi-State Development Agency. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1960. Hamilton served in the U.S. military.

John P. Heisserer, age 64, of Cape Girardeau, on Aug. 5, 2021. He joined Rice, Spaeth, Summers & Heisserer as a partner, and he was appointed as a circuit judge for the 32nd Judicial Circuit. Heisserer graduated from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans, LA, and joined The Missouri Bar in 1981.

Philip G. Hess, age 92, of St. Louis, on Aug. 3, 2021. Hess served as a circuit judge for Jefferson County for more than 25 years. Before serving as a judge, he worked as a prosecuting attorney for Jefferson County and hearings examiner for the Public Service Commission. Hess graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in Tuscaloosa and joined The Missouri Bar in 1957. He served in the Korean War.

Jerry T. Hoff, age 77, of St. Louis, on Dec. 9, 2020. Hoff worked as a prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice before starting a private firm, Hoff Law Centers, which he maintained for more than 30 years. He graduated from Stanford University School of Law in California and joined The Missouri Bar in 1977. Hoff served in the U.S. Navy.

Brian J. Lewis, age 43, of Kansas City, on July 11, 2021. Lewis worked for Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP and as a project officer for the Special Court of Sierra Leone. He started a private practice in Columbia and Kansas City. Lewis graduated from New York University School of Law in New York City. He joined The Missouri Bar in 2010.

James Francis Nagle Jr., age 90, of St. Louis, on June 21, 2021. Nagle joined The Missouri Bar in 1954.

Christopher Hugh Pickett, age 51, on July 25, 2021. Pickett worked as in-house counsel, focusing on financial technology companies. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1997.

Dale L. Rollings, age 81, of St. Charles, on July 1, 2021. He served as assistant prosecuting attorney for Greene County and head of the criminal division of the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. He started a private practice in St. Charles and worked for 22 years as executive director of the International Order of the Golden Rule. He was also the general counsel for 25 years to the St. Charles City-County Library. He graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1964.

Michael William Sagan, age 74, of Kansas City, on Aug. 2, 2021. Sagan worked in corporate law for more than a decade before starting his private practice. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1972.

David A. Sawyer, age 82, of Kansas City, on Jan. 13, 2021. Sawyer worked as estate planning counsel, an attorney examiner, escrow counsel, a regional claims attorney, and regional claims counsel. Before retiring, he served as senior counsel for Chicago Title Insurance Company. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army.

Randall W. Shackelford, age 67, of Gravois Mills, on Oct. 29, 2020. Shackelford served as associate judge in Lafayette County. He joined The Missouri Bar in 1984.

William J. Shapiro, age 82, of Kansas City, on Jan. 21, 2020. Shapiro practiced business law with several firms in Kansas City before retiring. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor and joined The Missouri Bar in 1961. He attended New York University for specialty training in tax law.

Donald Jay Sher, age 94, of Clayton, on April 29, 2021. Sher served as a lawyer for nearly 70 years, working alongside his father and son before retiring. In retirement, he volunteered with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. Sher received The Missouri Bar Pro Bono Award in 2001. He graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1949.

Thomas E. Sims Sr., age 89, of Kansas City, on March 7, 2021. Sims was an associate trial lawyer with Rogers Field & Gentry Law before being appointed a judge in the Municipal Court of Kansas City, where he served for 25 years. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1961. Sims served in the U.S. Navy.

Hugh A. Sprague, age 90, of Prairie Village, KS, on March 17, 2021. Sprague served as prosecuting attorney for Buchanan County and as legal and press assistant in Gov. Kit Bond’s first administration. He was also an assistant attorney general under John Ashcroft and an administrative law judge with the Missouri Administrative Hearing Commission and the Missouri Division of Transportation. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1966. Sprague served in the U.S. Army.

Charles H. Steib, age 78, of Chesterfield, on May 22, 2021. Steib practiced law for 45 years before retiring, serving as a municipal judge and prosecuting attorney. He also worked as a hearing officer for the Missouri Gaming Commission. He graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1970.

Frederick M. Switzer, age 87, of St. Louis, on Oct. 27, 2020. Switzer litigated in several multi-state federal and state courts, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. He also acted as a mediator and arbitrator for Financial Industy Regulatory Authority. He graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1959. Switzer served in the U.S. Navy.

George M. Temple, age 88, of Winterville, NC, on June 26, 2021. Sims was a lawyer for more than 50 years, working at Ralston Purina, Peter Kiewit, and Florida Progress. He graduated from the Institute of Chicago School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1975.

Theodore M. “Ted” Utchen, age 91, of Wheaton, IL, on March 4, 2021. Utchen held several positions, including trust and probate officer. He joined the law department at Miami Corporation, where he worked until retiring as vice president and general counsel. He also served as an arbitrator for the Cook County and DuPage County circuit courts. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor and joined The Missouri Bar in 1959. Utchen served in the U.S. Army.

Gregory B. Vatterott, age 77, of St. Louis, on Aug. 5, 2020. Vatterott was president of CF Vatterott, the family firm. He received his juris doctorate from Saint Louis University School of Law and a Master of Law from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. He joined The Missouri Bar in 1966.

Frank E. Vigus, age 84, of St. Louis, on March 9, 2021. He graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, IL, and joined The Missouri Bar in 1961. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a judge advocate.

Maghen M. Waterkotte, age 37, of St. Louis, on Jan. 4, 2021. Waterkotte worked at Edward Jones as associate general counsel. She graduated from Oklahoma City University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 2010.

Robert S. Wiley, age 78, of Crane, on June 3, 2021. Wiley started a private practice in Crane and served as prosecuting attorney, circuit judge, and city attorney before retiring. He graduated from Washington University School of Law and joined The Missouri Bar in 1969. Wiley served in the U.S. Army.

Vincent DePaul Zahnle, age 69, of Plato, on May 4, 2021. He served in the U.S. Army as a judge advocate general officer and a federal civilian lawyer. Zahnle graduated from Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, IN, and joined The Missouri Bar in 2005.
