Lawyers invited to participate in Out of the Darkness Walks

Walks will be hosted in four cities across Missouri

The legal profession has elevated rates of depression, substance use, and suicide. As September, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, nears, Missouri lawyers are invited to participate in one of four Out of the Darkness walks hosted in Battlefield, Columbia, Kansas City, and St. Louis.

During the community event, friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers walk together, supporting each other and in memory of those who have been lost to suicide. Walkers are also encouraged to wear “Honor Beads” to show their connection to the cause; share messages of hope; and participate in on-site activities.

While any member of the public is invited to attend, The Missouri Bar’s Lawyers Living Well Committee is organizing a group of legal professionals and law students to participate at each event. Can't make it? Lawyers can also contribute to the cause through financial donations.

If you are thinking about suicide, know someone who is, or need to talk with someone, we encourage you to immediately call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988. Depression is treatable. For free, confidential screening, please contact the Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program at 800-688-7859. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength and hope.
