Opportunities to serve: Missouri Bar Board of Governors seeking applications for leadership and service positions

The Missouri Bar Board of Governors is seeking applications from members of The Missouri Bar for appointments to serve on the Complaint Resolution Committee, Fee Dispute Committee and/or Legal Services of Southern Missouri Board of Directors.

Complaint Resolution Program
The Complaint Resolution Program provides an alternative method for the resolution of lawyer disciplinary complaints. The Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel may refer to the Complaint Resolution Program those complaints it believes could be resolved through an alternative resolution process rather than formal disciplinary proceedings.

The Complaint Resolution Committee oversees the program and the complaint resolution panel of volunteers. The program administrator is a member of the professional staff of The Missouri Bar, who is selected and assigned duties by the executive director of The Missouri Bar. The Complaint Resolution Committee is composed of five members of The Missouri Bar appointed by The Missouri Bar Board of Governors. Committee members serve terms of four years, with a limit of two terms.

The Board of Governors will appoint one member to the committee for a term of four years beginning immediately and ending on Dec. 31, 2029.

Fee Dispute Resolution Committee
The Fee Dispute Resolution Program provides a procedure for resolving fee disputes between clients and lawyers through facilitation, mediation, or arbitration. Participation by the parties in the Fee Dispute Program is voluntary, and the program provides services at no cost to the parties.

The Fee Dispute Resolution Committee oversees this program. The program administrator is a member of the professional staff of The Missouri Bar, who is selected and assigned duties by the executive director of The Missouri Bar. The committee includes seven members — four members of The Missouri Bar and three members of the general public — appointed by The Missouri Bar Board of Governors. Committee members serve terms of four years, with a limit of two terms. The term of service for this appointment will begin immediately and on May 31, 2029.

Legal Services of Southern Missouri Board of Directors

The Missouri Bar Board of Governors is seeking applications from members of The Missouri Bar residing in the following counties: Gasconade, Maries, Pulaski, Phelps, Texas, Crawford, Dent, Iron, Reynolds, Wayne, Shannon, Howell, and Oregon counties. The appointee will serve on the Board of Directors for Legal Services of Southern Missouri for a six-year term beginning immediately and ending on Aug. 31, 2031.

LSSM is a private, not-for-profit corporation that provides core legal services in the areas of domestic/sexual violence, family, consumer, housing, public benefits, and elder law.

The LSSM Board of Directors consists of 14 individuals — both lawyers and members of the general public — from the corporation's service area. Board members may serve up to three six-year terms. The board meets four times per year within its 43-county service area. If a board member is unable to travel to the meeting location, arrangements will be made for remote participation. LSSM reimburses board members for actual and reasonable expenses related to attendance at board meetings or events.

Each member of the board of directors will serve on at least one committee (Personnel, Finance, Legal Needs, or Client Grievance). Board members may expect to allocate up to two hours of time to their task during the months a board meeting is held and approximately one hour each of the remaining months. LSSM communicates with its board members monthly through the board's web portal and/or email.

Note: Legal Services Corporation regulations prohibit board members and members of their law firms from handling cases through LSSM's Judicare Program.
