Russ Sackreiter honored with Dr. Warren H. Solomon Civic Virtue Award

Russ Sackreiter, retired teacher from Columbia Public Schools, received the Dr. Warren H. Solomon Civic Virtue Award at The Missouri Bar’s annual Summer Institute in July.  

Sackreiter has worked with The Missouri Bar’s citizenship education department as an advisor since 2008. He has been a crucial part of the citizenship education program helping with events like Show Me the Constitution and Summer Institute. He also travels with Dr. Anthony Simones, Missouri Bar citizenship education director, to provide professional development opportunities to Missouri educators.  

During his time as a teacher, Sackreiter was dedicated to helping his students grow their knowledge of civics and the Constitution. His love for civics education inspired them to learn more and give back, said Stephen Davis, who had Sackreiter as an 8th-grade civics teacher at Jefferson Junior High School.  

“He was an outstanding teacher and is the reason why I have been committed to civic education ever since taking his class.” said lawyer Stephen Davis, who had Sackreiter as an 8th-grade civics teacher at Jefferson Junior High School.  

Davis, who has served on the bar’s Civic Education Committee for over 10 years, nominated Sackreiter for the award.  

Sackreiter said he was honored to receive the award. To him it represents the epitome of teaching citizenship education. 

“Receiving the Warren Soloman Award is a great honor, probably more so than any degree or other award,” he added.
