Senior Lawyer Committee supports Missouri Bar members 60-plus years old

The Senior Lawyer Committee seeks to inspire legal professionals and even better the lives and practices of senior lawyers.

Established in 2019, the Senior Lawyer Committee welcomes Missouri Bar members 60 years and older.

Richard Maseles and Donna Nanan were asked to serve as co-chairs of the new committee. While Nanan stepped down as co-chair due to the demands of her practice, Maseles continues to serve as committee chair.

“In that respect, she (Nanan) exemplifies our members in that she’s still practicing law but is also looking to a future beyond her practice,” Maseles said. “Now, I find that my fellow senior lawyers’ combination of energy and wisdom inspires me to do the best job I can for them.”

The Senior Lawyer Committee are working on several projects, including drafting a document about the principals of professionals for Missouri lawyers and preparing a presentation about retirement options.

The committee has also contacted judiciary leaders to advocate for members who have hearing and movement issues, while Maseles works with Office of State Courts Administrator’s Access to Justice Program to better understand how senior lawyers can work with the Americans with Disabilities Act coordinators in every Missouri circuit.

While the Senior Lawyer Committee won’t offer a CLE during the upcoming Spring Committee Meetings April 29-May 3, it has in the past covered CLE topics regarding succession plans for law firms and solo lawyers as part of retirement planning; lawyer well-being; and technology insight for senior lawyers.

Maseles encouraged lawyers to consider joining Missouri Bar committee and registering for Spring Committee Meetings.

“The CLEs s offered during committee week is a significant bargain — it’s not only free, but it’s usually quite useful to the members,” he said.
