The Missouri Bar observes National Celebrate Pro Bono Week 2019

Missouri lawyers provide thousands of hours of pro bono legal services each year to improve access to justice on behalf of the public.  This dedication to clients, communities and the bar continues to make our state an even better place to live. Next week, The Missouri Bar will observe National Celebrate Pro Bono Week in order to show our many volunteers how appreciated they are!

National Celebrate Pro Bono Week takes place Oct. 20-26. Here are a few ways you can get involved in improving access to justice for all Missourians:

  • Be Involved in Our Bar: From joining committees and applying for appointment vacancies to presenting CLE programs and through the Speakers' Bureau, there are many ways to be involved as a member of The Missouri Bar. Learn more at MoBar.org/GetInvolved. We welcome and need your active participation.
  • Rule 6.01: This spring, The Supreme Court of Missouri approved revisions to Rule 6.01 that allow members to seek a waiver of annual enrollment fees in exchange for providing pro bono service and agreeing to not be compensated for any legal work performed during the waiver period. If you're interested in limiting your practice to only pro bono work, this opportunity might be perfect for you.
  • Missouri.FreeLegalAnswers.org: Our online legal clinic continues to be a hit with lawyers and citizens alike. At Missouri.FreeLegalAnswers.org, Missourians with basic, civil legal concerns can ask questions—and Missouri lawyers answer them at a time and place that fits their own schedules.
  • The Missouri Bar's Disaster Recovery Legal Assistance Hotline: In the event of a natural disaster, like the flooding and storms that occurred this May, we activate a special toll-free number to take requests for legal help from impacted Missouri residents. When appropriate, callers are referred to lawyers who offer a volunteer telephone consultation, providing free legal advice for disaster-relate

We invite you during this week of celebrating pro bono service to find a way to use your unique skills to help your community. One of this year’s recipients of The Missouri Bar’s Pro Bono Publico Award, Mira Midvani said it best, “It’s very important to spread the word that the key to happiness is pro bono!”
