YLS Council holds winter meeting at site of the inaugural Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar

Last weekend, the Young Lawyers’ Section Council gathered in Columbia for its winter meeting, focusing on public service, networking, and leadership.

“I was happy to welcome The Missouri Bar YLS to Columbia for our winter meeting,” said Nicholas Jain, YLS Council chair. “We met at the Tiger Hotel, which is historically significant due to it being the site of the creation of the Missouri Non-Partisan Court Plan in 1937.”

The Non-Partisan Court Plan is Missouri’s constitutional system for merit-based selection of appellate and certain trial judges. The hotel also hosted the inaugural Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar in 1945.

Twelve YLS council members spent their afternoon Feb. 27 volunteering with the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri packing bags of food. Six council members recorded videos to educate the public on their rights based on content from ShowMeRights.org.

The council conducted official business Feb. 28 and gave updates on various projects including:

-          Planning for upcoming events such as continuing legal education programs, annual meeting, networking opportunities, and law school events

-          Budget review and funding requests

-          Reports from various committees and liaisons
