YLS to host no-cost “Milly Project” documentary CLE in Joplin on July 9
The Missouri Bar Young Lawyers’ Section Council Diversity Committee is hosting a no-cost CLE on July 9 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin featuring the 2021 film “The Milly Project” followed by a panel discussion.
The film begins at 2 p.m., with the panel discussion immediately following at 3 p.m.
The event is worth 2.4 MCLE, 2.4 ethics, and 2.4 elimination of bias credits.
Attendees must stay for the panel discussion to receive CLE credit.
What is “The Milly Project”?
“The Milly Project” tells the story of an enslaved woman named Milly Sawyers who fought for and won her freedom in Springfield before the Civil War.
It was inspired by the 2017 discoveries of a local archivist, who unearthed handwritten court documents and manuscripts from the 1830s. Originally written as a play by teacher Kendra Chappell and her high school students, it has blossomed into a nationally recognized production.
It was adapted into a film in 2021 that was nominated for three awards at the New York International Film Festival, including Best Screenplay (winner), Best Social Justice Film (winner), and Best Acting Ensemble.
